When it comes to preparing for the TOEFL, many students enjoy learning in the company of others, finding their peers' questions or comments insightful. Other students, however, know they do not perform at their best when attempting to learn challenging information in a group setting. They worry about slowing the group down or holding them back because they need to work at a slower pace. Alternatively, these students may find themselves feeling bored or frustrated once they have mastered a subject but must wait for the rest of the group to demonstrate similar mastery before moving on. Meet a Birmingham TOEFL Tutor: Jiehong C.
Jiehong C. was born in Hong Kong and lived there for the first fifteen years of his life until his father accepted a position with a large tech company in San Francisco. Jiehong knew firsthand the importance of thoroughly understanding written and spoken English, and he hoped to one day travel the world helping others master this notoriously difficult language. Jiehong worked very hard in high school and obtained an impressive ACT score, which allowed him to attend Cornell University, where he majored in English. During his undergrad program, he worked for five semesters as a tutor in the university's learning center. After graduating, Jiehong went on to obtain a master's degree in computer science, as well as a TESOL certificate, from the University of California at Los Angeles. After graduating, he happily accepted a position with a non-profit organization focused on improving students' knowledge of English around the world.
Jiehong taught English in different countries for more than ten years, including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and India before getting married and settling in his wife's hometown of Birmingham. When he learned Manhattan Review had a local office in the city, he applied for a tutoring position and was quickly welcomed to the team. His students appreciate his patience, as well as his clear explanations and extensive teaching experience. When Jiehong isn't setting the next generation of college students up for their own successes, he can be found playing tennis with friends and working on his motorcycle.
